Celebrating 20 years in Business - Cockpit Arts

Two years after I started up my Business in the North of England I decided to move to London. The new millenium was a great time for new beginnings so I applied for a place at Cockpit Arts in Holborn, Central London and was invited to take a studio amongst the wealth of talent there. I moved my studio down in July 2000 and have been at Cockpit Arts eversince!

Real Jewellery for real people

I noticed that the lady in the lift was wearing a bright yellow cuff with butterfly motifs on and after straining to see it realised that it was one of my creations! I then said 'I made that cuff you're wearing!' and she said that she had bought it in Greenwich Market some time ago

I asked her for a photograph and she was very kind and said yes!'

Making the TFL 'Farringdon Snowdrop' Brooch

I made the 'Farringdon Snowdrop' Brooch for the Transport for London 'The brooch is back' exhibtion as part of Clerkenwell Design Week at Craft Central in May 2017. The brief was to be inspired by the iconic imagery of the London Underground. So I chose the iconic roundel as the shape for my brooches.

The 'Farringdon Snowdrop' Brooch - Preliminary Sketches

I decided to research which flowers may be indigenous to Farringdon as many hundreds of years ago the area would have been surrounded by fields. It proved difficult to pinpoint a specific flower so I looked at more recent history and discovered that in the late 1800's there had been markets in the area where young women sold bunches of flowers and watercress.

Colours of the Women's Suffrage movement

When women's suffrage or the suffragettes are mentioned the colours purple, green and white come to mind and although these were key colours of some of the organisations that supported and promoted and fought for women's right to vote they were by no means the only colours to represent the movement.
